National Bamboo Mission

Details

As a result of this historic amendment, regulations pertaining to forest products do not apply to bamboo produced in non-forest areas. The NBM and the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) scheme were combined in 2022–2023.

In order to connect growers with consumers, the National Bamboo Mission has been reorganized. Its main goals are to develop the entire bamboo value chain, from planting materials to plantations, facilities construction, skilled labor, and brand processing marketing, as well as micro, small, and medium-sized businesses, skilled labor, and brand-building initiatives using a cluster approach mode. Currently, 24 States and UTs are using the program. The NBM includes provisions for growing bamboo plantations and setting up facilities for government agencies and private business owners to extract bioenergy, produce activated carbon products, make charcoal, pellets, and ethanol gasifiers, among other things.

NBM also had plans to revitalize the bamboo sector by implementing a number of technological advancements and supporting legislative measures that would lower carbon emissions and boost domestic production.

The following are the mission’s main goals:

  • To expand the area under bamboo plantations on non-forest public and private lands in order to augment agricultural revenue, enhance climate change resistance, and ensure that companies have access to high-quality raw materials. The main locations for bamboo plantations will be along irrigation canals, water bodies, homesteads, communal areas, and fertile wastelands.
  • To create cutting-edge primary processing facilities close to the production site, along with primary treatment and seasoning plants, preservation technologies, and market infrastructure, in order to enhance post-harvest management.
  • To support R&D, entrepreneurship, and business models at the micro, small, and medium levels in order to feed larger industries and encourage product development while taking market demand into consideration.
  • To revitalize India’s underdeveloped bamboo industry
  • To encourage the creation of awareness, skill development, and capacity building for the advancement of the bamboo industry from production to market demand.
  • Realigning efforts to increase the income of the primary producers by reducing reliance on the import of bamboo and bamboo products through increased productivity and the appropriateness of domestic raw materials for industry.
