There is substantial unmet demand for eye care for a country with the world’s fastest-growing economy. 

Cataracts and glaucoma affect almost half of all blind persons in the country, which is experiencing an increase in the number of elderly people with these conditions as the population ages.

More than 145 million Indians will be 60 or older by the year 2022. In India, whose basic healthcare infrastructure is less than in other affluent nations, eye illnesses are the most easily disregarded medical issues.

Many of these difficulties stem from the fact that we aren’t taught to comprehend eye-related issues beyond the necessity of wearing spectacles. 

Many people, for example, are unaware that their eyes can be affected by chronic illnesses and even cancer; or that the blind are severely limited in their ability to do everyday activities. 

India has one-third of the world’s blind population, with 12 million blind persons compared to 39 million worldwide.

Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism are the most common causes of moderate to severe visual impairment, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (blurred vision). 

For those affected by blindness, the loss of quality of life and well-being is compounded by an enormous financial burden on society.

Because avoidable blindness accounts for 80% of all cases, it’s easy to see how timely and improved eye care may benefit society and the economy.

Tens of millions of additional workers will enter the workforce since caretakers may now devote their full attention to economic activities. 

Blindness may have a devastating impact on the economy of India, but it can also be cured and prevented.
