MISSION FOR INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT OF HORTICULTURE

Mission For Integrated Development Of Horticulture (MIDH) is a centrally sponsored scheme in India under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (GoI). It is effect from 2014-15.

 It is implemented under the Green Revolution – Krishonnati Yojana.

  • This scheme covers vegetables, fruits, roots and tuber crops, aromatic plants, flowers, spices, bamboo, coconut, cashew and cocoa.
  • The scheme includes technology promotion, research, post-harvest management, extension, processing and marketing.
  • The scheme emphasises using differentiated strategies for different states based on the region’s agro-climatic features.
  • MIDH also provides technical support and advice to state horticultural missions, Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), Saffron Mission and the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA).

FUNDING PATTERN

  • Government of India (GoI) contributes60% of total outlay for developmental programmes in all the states except states in North East and Himalayas, 40% share is contributed by State Governments.
  • In the case of North Eastern States and Himalayan States, Government of India (GoI) contributes 90%.

STRATEGY

  • By adopting end-to-end strategy that addresses pre-production, production, post-harvest management, processing, and marketing to ensure that growers and producers receive fair compensation.
  • Encourage the development of R&D technologies for post-harvest management, processing, cultivation, and production.
  • Enhance infrastructure for post-harvest management, value-added processing, and commercialization.
  • Boost quality-based productivity.
  • At the national, regional, state, and sub-state levels, adopt a coordinated strategy and encourage collaboration, convergence, and interaction across R&D, processing, and marketing organizations in the public and private sectors.
  • Encourage FPOs to collaborate with Financial Institutions (FIs) and Market Aggregators (MAs) in order to provide farmers with sufficient returns.

SUB-SCHEME UNDER MIDH

  • National Horticulture Mission (NHM): Focuses on how states and union territories’ horticultural industries are developing.
  • Horticulture Mission for North East and Himalayan States (HMNEH): Focuses on the demands of the Himalayan and Northeastern states for horticultural development.
  • National Horticulture Board (NHB): Encourages the post-harvest handling and marketing of horticultural products and facilitates the integrated growth of the horticulture industry.
  • Coconut Development Board (CDB): Works on the development of the coconut industry through technology upgradation and area expansion.
  • Central Institute for Horticulture (CIH): Provides technical support and capacity building in the North Eastern Region.

Eligibility

All farmers registered societies / state governments are eligible for the scheme

  • The NHM has contributed significantly to the growth of the horticulture sector in India.
  • It has led to increased production, productivity, and income of horticulture farmers.
  • Improved infrastructure and market linkages have facilitated better market access and price realization for farmers.
