Oil is removed from the seed by mechanical extraction (expeller press) initially, followed by chemical extraction in a conventional edible oil manufacturing facility (hexane extraction). When both techniques are used, less than 1% of the oil remains in the meal produced.

When used to identify a cooking oil product, the general phrase “vegetable oil” refers to a combination of many oils, most of which are based on palm, corn, soybean, or sunflower oils.

Furthermore, the Indian government is always working to improve the domestic supply of edible oil and minimise reliance on imports. For example, the government has proposed the National Mission on Edible Oil to fulfil the country’s need for edible oils such as sesame oil, groundnut oil, safflower oil, palm oil, and so on.
