Much of this region’s woods, which are homes to elephants, tigers, and other huge animals, are being destroyed to make way for the growth of rubber trees. They are among the world’s most endangered forests. The primary threat is agriculture, as trees are removed to make way for farms that cultivate palm oil, sugar, rice, corn, and at an alarmingly rapid rate rubber plants.

Rubber can and should be manufactured without destroying natural trees. Rubber manufacturing, when done properly, improves biodiversity and carbon sequestration while decreasing carbon dioxide emissions from deforestation. It also prevents breaches of human and labour rights, as well as land grabs.

The indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin were the first to utilise natural rubber for several uses. By the mid-eighteenth century, Europeans were experimenting with rubber as a waterproofing agent. Rubber was used to manufacture waterproof shoes in the early nineteenth century (Dean, 1987). Hevea brasiliensis, which grew mostly in the Brazilian Amazon, was the best source of latex, the milky fluid from which natural rubber goods were manufactured (but also in the Amazonian regions of Bolivia and Peru).
