Manufacturing Process
Raw cotton is opened and cleaned with a willow or opener machine to remove seeds, leaf detritus, and contaminants. The fiber is next bleached with hydrogen peroxide in an alkaline bath to remove the natural waxes and oils that make raw cotton water-resistant. After bleaching, the cotton is thoroughly washed to remove the bleaching chemicals before being dried in a machine. The dried purified fiber is carded, or fed through a carding machine, which aligns the fibres into a uniform sheet. The carded web is subsequently coiled into rolls, crushed into balls, layered into pads, or processed into swabs, depending on the product shape.
